The next meeting of the Story County Amateur Radio Club will be at 7:30 pm, Thursday, November 1, 2012, at the 4-H building on the south west corner of 13th Street and Stange Road in Ames (but actually off of Wanda Daley Road). The program for the November SCARC meeting will a video covering the HK0NA DXpedition to Malpelo Island, a small volcanic island off the West coast of Colombia. This DXpedition, which took place over a two week period in January and February 2012, made more than 195 thousand QSO. From the video's description:
This near-vertical island of 86 acres represented an extreme physical challenge for the team. Team members were winched onto the island from zodiacs and then faced a 300' climb just to get to the first operating site. Even more challenging was the 600' vertical climb to the operating site located at the top of the 980' mountain peak.
This video captures the planning and organization phases, the non-stop pileups, humor and local animal life -- as well as incredible footage of team members climbing the mountain.
